About Us

State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) Mizoram

The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) Mizoram serves as the apex coordinating body for organ and tissue donation and transplantation activities within the state. Functioning under the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) of the Government of India, SOTTO Mizoram operates in collaboration with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) and the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO).

Established in April 2024, SOTTO Mizoram is located within the premises of the Directorate of Hospital and Medical Education at MINECO, Aizawl. The organisation is tasked with overseeing all aspects of organ and tissue transplantation services in the state. This includes policy formulation, programme implementation, and system development for the ethical and equitable procurement and distribution of organs.

SOTTO Mizoram maintains an official waiting list of patients requiring organ transplants and ensures the allocation of organs based on established national protocols and guidelines. In addition, the organisation provides counselling and support services to the families of brain-dead patients, encouraging and facilitating the process of organ donation.

Organ donation in India is legally sanctioned under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, which recognizes and defines brain death as the irreversible cessation of all brain activity. This legal framework enables deceased organ donation and underpins the mission of SOTTO Mizoram.

Despite this, India continues to face a significant shortfall in the retrieval and utilization of organs from deceased donors. A large number of potentially life-saving organs go unused due to prevalent myths, misconceptions, and a general lack of awareness among the public.

SOTTO Mizoram is dedicated to addressing these challenges through sustained efforts in public sensitization, education, and advocacy. The organisation is committed to strengthening the organ donation ecosystem in Mizoram and aligning it with the highest ethical and medical standards.
